Session prep brief

A short briefing for the next session, streamed from notes, actions, journal entries and assessment scores. Save it as a private coach artefact, or copy it. The coachee never sees it.

For: Coaches carrying a full book

Worked example: Sarah Chen, Aspire, session 9. Daniel Okafor preparing on the train.

Fictional composite for illustration. No real client data.

Walkthrough

Daniel opens Sarah’s overview and generates a prep brief. It suggests check-ins, names movement since last time, flags a slipped action, and offers two or three focus areas — each pointing at something already in the record. He saves it on the engagement as a coach-private artefact. Sarah will not see it.

  1. 1 · Grounded in the engagement

Notes, actions, journal, scores. If it is not in the record, it should not appear as a fact. The brief is a reading aid, not a new source.

    • If the record is thin, the brief will be thin. That is useful information.
    • Regenerate if the first pass is generic. Generic means the record is not being read.
  2. 2 · Private on purpose

Save it on the engagement if you want it next week. Coachee routes never join that table. Copy it onto the floor if you prefer a pad.

    • A saved brief is a coach artefact, not a third record the coachee must maintain.
    • The coachee-invisible rule does not change when you file it.
  3. 3 · Start the sitting from it

Use one suggested check-in. Drop the rest. The brief is not an agenda the coachee agreed to.

    • If you read it aloud you have already lost the sitting.
    • The slipped action is usually the real opener.

Three insights

1

Memory is a bad CRM

By session 9 you will remember the vivid story and forget the overdue action. The record does not.

2

Private is a trust choice

A brief the coachee cannot open cannot leak into their portal, a sponsor pack, or the wrong audit. Saving it does not change who it is for.

3

Thin briefs mean thin records

If generation gives you nothing you could use, the engagement is under-noted. That is a practice issue, not a software issue.

10 minutes before the sitting

  1. 0′+3m

    Generate

On the client overview. Wait for the stream to finish.

  2. 3′+5m

    Pick one check-in

Usually the slipped action or the score that moved. Copy that line only.

  3. 8′+2m

    Save or leave

Save as a coach-private artefact if you want it next week. Do not paste it into notes until you have had the sitting.
